The latest triumphs saw the Jewellers down Barrie 7-2 Monday night at Bond Lake Arena following an earlier 7â€"6 verdict over Orillia. That injury list includes high-scoring Cam Reston who is out from “six to eight weeks" with a shoulder dislocation; Paul O'Dacre. Doug Pollock, wrist injury; and Dennis Limoges, broken hand; plus sundry other aches and pains. But it didn't stop the Jewellers from rather handily defeating Barrie Monday night which is the team Artemchuk figures has the “best personnel in the leagueâ€. POWER PLAYS The Jewellers did it mainly by their powerâ€"play prowess scoring on - His Mid-Ontario Junior B team continues to be wracked with injuries but. theyralso continue t9 win. “I don't know how long it can go on,†said 'Artemchuk. “But the boys just keep working that much harder to compensate for the i_nj1_1ri£;s_.': Oak Ridges Dynes Jewellers†coach Pete Artemchuk has a pleasant problem; > I was fortunate enough to be the only spectator in the presence of this happening last Wednesday morning in the Richmond Hill Arena. There wasn‘t a big crowd, There’s a “Cinderella†story happening in Richmond Hill and hardly anyone knows about it. Truly. It's enough to make the baseball “Blue Jays" story pale into whatever things pale into. I’m talking about the Richmond Hill Firefighter‘s hockey team which was celebrating yet another milestone in its brief and tortuous three-year existence. Maybe even two milestones. The local boys had just equalled their most-wins record in the past two seasons. Two. The marvel of all this is the fact they have only played three games this season. Sweet “What made this win particularly sweet.“ said spokesman and goalie Blair Robson, “is that we beat Kitchener for the first time ever." “It was prétty 'trying that first year," he admits. “I think we scored 30 goals and had 197 scored against us.“ The score was a convincing 5-2 one and the Richmond Hill club, spon- sored by Mutual Life Insurance, were in 3 Stanley Cup mood. “We finished last in a 17-team league in our first season,†Robson was saying, “and last year we climbed all the way up to 16th place." This year the world. Mental scars Robson is one of the seven “originals†of the team and, as a goalie. has the mental scars to show for those early days. He vividly recalls being in goal in one game when Toronto “beat us 13- 1 and I was called upon to stop over 100 shots." It was so bad Goodyear Tires offered to sponsor him. "I actually lost 10 pounds in that game,“ he said. “I happened to weigh myself before the game. That‘s how I know.“ Injured Dyn esmen keep rolling But Robson hung in there and last @112 Iihmtl Section B Blair Robson time to duck Put out the ï¬re Wednesday, October 26, 1977 Monday night's game saw the Jewellers put the match out of reach with three straight power play goals courtesy of Blair Sutherland, Steve Sherman, two. Paul Westcott got the other one. Also scoring were Dale Roffey. Brent Dobson‘ two. Assists went to Steve Irwin, Sherman, three, Dobson, three. Mike Fitzgibbons. Between the two of them, Sherman and Dobson picked up 11 points. PENALTY PARADE Monday night’s game was also plagued with a series of penalties involving various mis- demeanors such as fights, boarding. etc. Barrie accumulated 11 penalties to Dynes’ four in the final period and that was the story. The thing that has Artemchuk elated is the fact “we’re getting scoring mileage from all three lines. When you‘ve got scoring balance you‘re tough to beat." Robson got some welcome relief between the pipes last year when Bennie Bourget, an ex-junior player, joined the team and is again in the line-up this season. “It must be gettingâ€" obvious to the opposition that they can't walk into penalties against us.†said Artemchuk. “We only moved up one notch in the standings," said Robson, “but we had the fourth best goal-average in the league. We just couldn‘t put the puck in the net." season the Firefighters started to come on strong. {0111: such occasions against Barrie The Firefighters know all about the price that comes with penalties. Ouch In one game they dropped a 10-1 verdict which saw the opposition scoring nine power-play goals. “We don‘t really take it all that serious as some of the teams,†philosophises Robson. “Teams like Scarboro (who won the league last year) and Kitchener aren’t used to losing. They get upset. The league itself has an im- pressive array of teams spread across southern Ontario including London, Brantford, East York, Dundas, Etobicoke, Guelph, Hamilton, Kitchener, Mississauga and Niagara Falls. “We’re the ether‘ way around. We get upset when iwerwiq.†Robson is only kidding because this season’s team has added some strength and if the game against Kitchener is any indication, they should do very well this time out. “It’s a good league and you get to meet other firefighters," said Robson. “We always have a few beers after the games and some chit- chat." Get a case In fact, the league is probably the only one that has written into its constitution that the home team must provide the visitors with a case of beer after the game. How’s that for sociable progress. Coming up Dec. 29 is a really big day of hockey at the Richmond Hill Arena. The league-champion Scarboro Fire Fighters (with several ex-Major Junior A players in the line-up) will play the Southern Ontario Firefighters. The game will be hosted by the Mutual Life Firefighters of Richâ€" mond Hill and starts at 12 noon. Sure would be nice to see some spectators turn out. JUST NOTES Why is it every time I climb up on a pulpit I fall off it? Sort of, anyway. Last week I fulminated against “slapshots†and all that. So what happened? The Richmond Hill Rams scored three straight goals against Dixie. Right. All on slap shots. Anyway. you know what I mean. You can‘t be perfect. I‘ve got to write something here and I can’t remember what it is. SKATATHON In any case‘ I do have a note that says the Richmond Hill Minor Hockey Association will hold its annual “Skatathon this Saturday at both Richmond Hill Arenas. It‘s being held to provide money for local minor hockey so get out and support the youngsters. It's for your benefit. too. Finally: Someone left a mysterious note for me. Wants me to run it in the column. All it says is whistlerA" Well, I dunno. Figure it out for yourself. fred simpson Watch for the He said that “our young payers such as Sutherland and Dobson are playing terrifically. Add that to the steady play of the veterans and you have a good thing going for you The Richmond Hill Rams and Dixie Beehives took turns walking into penalties but the latter team came out the winner by 5â€"4 in Provincial Junior A hockey action Tuesday night of last week. The puck appeared to bounce off the top of the net, back in front. and Chris Costello was there to put it home. That was the big difference. The Rams, after trailing 2â€"0 in the early going, came alive in the third period to tie the game at 3-3 and then take a 4-3 lead. Bang. the Rams ran into a penalty and Dixie's Steve Cloutier fired a blazer which goalie Dan Gunning got a piece of but couldn‘t hold. It was sags-ville for the Rams after this and Dixie's Reid Campbell scored the winner at 13:01. The Oak Ridges Dynes Jewellers are going to slip an iron fist into the velvet glove they’ve been wearing so far this season in the Mid-Ontario Junior B hockey league. The Beehivers obligingly took some penalties for the Rams also but Rich- mond Hill couldn’t get organized enough the rest of the way. OLD STORY It was the same old story for the luckless Rams who have been either tying or losing close games most of this early season. They managed only one shot on a power play and that by Phil Wood which Dixie’s goalie Paul Fisher deflected with his elbow. Also coming up big for the Jewellers was goalie Dave Heisey who tended the Coach Artemchuk blasts the ’goons' Oak Ridges Dynes Jeweller’s Steve Sherman (16) is tied up this time by Barrie Colts‘ Jim Angus but it must have been a Rams lose 5-4 Pete Artemchuk . . . Enough's enough Dixie goes Whist/Ihg by twines in the absence of Doug Brum- well who is serving a two-game suspension. That came in the game against Orillia which saw Brumwell handed a 10 minute misconduct, game misconduct, and a two-minute minor for protesting too vigorously to the It was Dixie’s Jeff Black scoring the only goal of the opening period with Conrad Wiggan making it 2-0 at 2:40 of the middle session. The Rams came out skating in the third period with plenty of help from Dixie who picked up a series of penalties with Richmond Hill scoring two power play goals. “I‘ll predict right now that the two clubs who play this style of hockey will also finish onetwo on the last rung in the league.†PENALTY TIME It was penalty time for the Rams after this and at one point they were in danger of playing seven minutes short of a full team. Dixie, obligingly, caught the penalty-disease also and neutralized the danger. This seemed to pick the Rams up and they got on the scoreboard at 14:28 when Mike Ham carried the puck behind the Dixie net, controlled it. and then slid a perfect pass to Paul Gallagher in front of the net and he slapped it home. It was 3-1 for Dixie on a goal by Steve Cloutier just before the period ended. “We’ll have to control them our- selves. I’m tired of clubs out to get my key players. They had better realize this right now." ' Finally, an Artemchuk postscript to the above: The Rams received a break at 9:25 when a goal was called back when Dixie’s Ken Holmes was penalized seconds before it was scored. John Hogarth sizzled a slap shot from the blueline in at 1:39 from John Olds and Wood; then it was Gary Kruze tying the game on another blueline slap shot at 2:37 from Olds and Gallagher. The Rams, with the help of Dixie’s penalty obliging, got the goâ€"ahead goal That’s the word from coach Pete Artemchuk who told “The Liberal" he’s “sick and tired of taking it on the chin from clubs who have been deliberately out to get our key players. And I’m talking about hockey goons.†“These clubs are strictly head- hunters," he said. “That’s the way they play hockey and they’re not going to get away with it with us any longer. It‘s tit- for-tat from here on in, payment for payment.†Artemchuk said his club had been attempting to stick to “hockey this season but it’s not working and the game officials apparently can’t control these clubs. Tï¬e Thornhill Thunderbirds and Owen Sound. Artemchuk wasn’t bashful about pointing to the two clubs he considers the prime offenders: Please release me slip knot.
