Hill ’Green Ma chine ’ aha/ks up victories The Richmond Hill Wilson-Niblett Minor Peewee A’s #â€" known as the “Green Machine" â€"â€" are off and doing well. This lead lasted until those fateful last five minutes when Kevin Ryan scored from Kevin Mclnnis. One minute later it was Ron Gelineau They won both their weekend hockey games 5- 2 over Aurora; 2-1 over Orillia. Saturday’s game in Orillia saw Richmond Hill come back to score two goals in the last five minutes of play to win 2-1. Orillia opened the scoring in the first minute of play with Richmond Hill Shorthanded. Rams, Tigers: Tale of 2 T0 was ' “Did you see the game?” was his classic rejoinder. I have never been able to come back from a retort like It was occasioned by the return to Richmond Hill of Aurora‘s coach, Carl Brimblecombe. Carl, as you likely know, was coach of the Rams for a number of seasons. It was his first official return wearing the garb of the enemy, so to speak. BE DEEP I had it in my mind to whistle down to the inner sanctums of the Rich- mond Hill Arena and have a chat with Carl following the game. One of those in-depth interviews peppered with such “ho ho” questions as “how does it feel to be back in the old arena" and “are you sorry you Somehow I’ve never felt very comfortable asking a coach “what happened" after his team has been bombed 13-2 or zip. It‘s tantamount to asking someone who has just fallen down 12 flights of stairs, why he missed the first one. And if he shook himself up maybe. This coach wasn’t a particularly eloquent type and he would in- variably turn my questions back on left?" Well, I didn’t go. The Rams won the game and I didn't have the heart to do it. It’s an old failing of mine. I was born to only interview coaches who have just won games. There, I've confessed. HEAVY. MAN It‘s been my experience that the atmosphere in hockey dressing rooms can be heavy at the.best of times. And when a team, as this one had, loses 15 games in a row the atmosphere really gets heavy. I think it all started a few years ago when I was a budding, or maybe deflowered, sports writer in Kingston. My sports editor at that time in space issued an edict that forced me to interview the local hockey coach after every game. Win or lose. In the dressing room, not in the corridor. The thought occurred to me the other night at the Richmond Hill Rams-Aurora Tiger Provincial Junior A hockey game here. Maybe even start a fan club for coaches or something. I’ve even got a name for it: “Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Coaches.” Somehow that title has a familiar, ring to it. After 100 years of being in this business, I’ve come to the infirm conclusion that on at least one day of the year society should hold a minute’s silence for coaches. Sports HI CARL . . . The Friday night game saw a hard hitting Rich- mond Hill team opening up a 3â€"1 lead after one period of play and then scoring two more while allowing Aurora just one. It wag a fine defensive display by goalie Billy Keates and his defence. Richmond Hill’s line-up Be kind Classified Anyway, that’s the way I feel about it. So that’s why I didn’t interview Carl and it’s also the reason I never got around to writing this column about him. POSTSCRIPT A postscript to the above me; derings. As of writing, coa Brimblecombe and his Tige turned the tables on the Rams Aurora Sunday night. Beat them Which shows to go that terviewing people is all a matter timing. Help. Just thought you’d like Carl. NOTES Heaps of congratulations to soft- ball pitching star Marion Fox who has been elected as the first member of the Canadian Amateur Softball Association’s Hall of Fame. Marion. who played several seasons with the Richmond Hill Intermediate softball team under manager Mary Williamson, is also the only Canadian pitcher ever named to a women‘s world softball all starieam. She pitched Richmond Hill into the national semi-finals in 1973. Marion lives in Willowdale‘ that. I just want to shrink from the scene. And 1/ don’t blame the coaches. Your goalie has just let 14 goals in (fanning on eight of them), your best defenceman has lost his pants, and your forwards have trouble opening and shutting the dressing room door. All you need right aftér the game is some enlightened reporter to ask you “what happened?" Finally: Yea, Argos. They’ve done it again. I watched Sunday‘s epochal ending and I thought I was suffering from a recurring nightmare. The only difference was that Leon McQuay didn’t drop the ball this time. Just proves that things do change, even though Argo fumbles don't. And if Ottawa wins they should call an investigation with the RCMP, naturally, doing the investigating. Watch out for the whistler. Final comment: I think they should bottle the entire Argo team and management and send them to the Smithsonian Institute for scientific investigation. Maybe we can find out the meaning of it all. Also, the Ottawa Roughriders (who deserved to lose from their play) should be charged admission into Olympic Stadium for their game against Montreal Alouettes. The satisfaction was destined to be short-lived when Richmond Hill Rams‘ coach Ken “Satch” Brookes beat his old boss Carl Brimblecombe of the Aurora Tigers Tuesday night of last week in their first meeting of the season. Brookes, who served under Brim- blecombe last season, had seen his Provincial Junior A Rams surprise the Tigers with an 8â€"6 win here last week despite the fact his team blew an early 5-0 lead. Brimblecombe, who switched to a Tiger uniform in 1977 after several seasons as head coach of the Rams, turned the tables last Sunday night in Aurora winning by the same score, 8-6 Goals by Mike Ham, two, Phil Wood, John Olds and Randy Hughes-Guest had got the Rams off to a sizzling start against the Tigers until the 4:24 mark of fred simpson Willowdale. But Pete wasn’t happy. “I can’t remember when this team played such a poor game as it did against Barrie,” he said. “Technically, they were doing everything wrong. And maybe it was a case of having trouble getting up for the game, I don’t know.” If your hockey team has won 11 out of its first 12 games and you can still find something to be unhappy about you’ve got it made. Dynes chak ‘up two more It was a “whoop-deâ€"do” ending for members of the Langstaff Secondary School junior soccer team Wednesday of last week. You’d better believe it. Barrie had removed its goalie. This triumph followed on the heels of a 2-1 victory over Bradford the previous Monday which gave the Langstaff team the right to enter the championship final. The game was a penalty-filled one although actual fights were at a minimum. The Tigers‘ ebullient Mario Giallonardo was bounced from the game for an act of temperament in the second period . . . and Rams' Olds later received a 10-minute misconduct for arguing too vociferously. . . . Dan Gunning went all the way in the Rich- mond Hill twines. The Rams are currently down to one goalie with the departure of Mitch Havelock which was termed as a “mutual” agreement between the coach and himself. “They’re not scoring and, worse, they’re getting scored on. If things don’t improve I’ll just have to replace them. There are a lot of good hockey players out there." Oak Ridges led Barrie 2-1 at the end of the first period and the score was tied 3-3 going into the third. Or they’ll be gone. “We’re going to assess the situation over the next three games and come to a decision about these people,” he said. It was the first meeting of the season Tuesday night between the Rams Sunday’s game in Aurora was a tight one for the first two periods with the score tied 2-2 at the end of the first session and 4â€"4 going into the third. Sandwiched in between the first two was a goal by Barrie’s Brad McDonald. PENALTIES Then came a series Dynes’ penalties in the last minute and a Barrie goal by Wayne Church and the going got tough. Penalties hurt the Dynes cause throughout the game as Barrie scored three power play goals. Dynes offset this with only one of their own. The Tigers decided the issue in the final 20 minutes rapping in four straight goals from the sticks of Bill Gray, two, Tom Robertson and Sandro Silvestri. The Rams’ Ken Elson fired in two goals in that same period but it was too little and too late. Other Richmond Hill goalmen included Gary Kruze, John Olds, Bill Stephenson and Mike Ham. Dale Roffey and another one by Ian Myles. Goalgetter for Dynes were Dobson with two. Blair Sutherland, Steve Sherman, Roffey, and Myles. DOBSON STARS It was a particularly scintilating week for the 16-year-old Dobson, playing his first season of junior hockey, as he blazed home five goals in the Dynes come-from-behind win with Owen Sound. The championship win for Langstaff was hardly a surprise as the team has played consistently winning ball all season with a record of eight league wins and only one loss. Artemchuk continues to be impressed by the play of Dobson who he maintains is “just as good a player as Montreal’s Doug Jarvis was at this stage of his career, even better.” Up front in the goal-parade was the aforementioned Dobson with five and two assists; Sherman, 2, and 4; Tony Robinson, two goals; Roffey, one and 4; Paul Westcott, one goal. Three assists each to Mike Carnevale and Randy Irwin with singles to Wright and Myles. Artemchuk coached Jarvis at one juncture of the Canadian star’s career at Brantford. The Jewellers are at home to Orillia next Monday night for a 7:45 game at Bond Lake Arena; and are back in Barrie Thursday. for eight goals in the final 20 minutes “He even looks a bit like Jarvis in his build and features,” said Artemchuk. “l-E's gefiniiely a future pro pick.” Ironically enough, the first loss came on the first game and was against Aurora.
