IN1928 North American Life‘s bonspiel sponsorship began in 1928 with the men's Toronto Bonspiel. From that year‘s Barrie winners. the trophy travelled throughout Ontario i going as far afield as Milwaukee in 1962. When men's interest flagged in the mid-60‘s, the bonspiels were discontinued. Women‘s growing enthusiasm for this sport renewed Nalaco‘s sponsorship. Last year it became the first organization to sponsor the bonspiel for Toronto and District Clubs affiliated with the Southern Ontario Ladies‘ Curling Association. trophy was put up for the first time. Our thanks go _ t0 Sinner Dennis Miller 3 for providing the trophy. The team split the games this year and the trophy went to Richmond Hill on the basis of ends won. It will be up for grabs again when the teams clash at Avonlea later this year. Later in the day the Business Girls held their “Swiss Surprise“ con- sisting of a six-end mixed game and a swiss steak dinner for all in at- tendance. The Business girls did a great job tas usuali on this event and those partaking reported a good time was had by everyone. Outâ€"ofâ€"club bonspiel time is upon us and we have a report that a rink composed of skip Barry Wilson. Glenn Charge. Stew Paul and Wayne Luckock. curled in a Penetang Men‘s Spiel this past weekend. An indication of the level of competition was shown by the fact that the world championship rink of Sweden‘s Ragnar Kamp was in this event. Our boys did not get the chance to play Ragnar but they did win two of four games before bowing out in the third event. The Ladies In-Club “Stephenson” Trophy event was held last Wednesday with Peggy Welsh‘s rink winning top honors. Her rink com- prised Sue Bailley. That was the story for the Richmond Hill Legion Major Midgets on the weekend as they tied Aurora 2-2 and Orillia 6-6. The Aurora game saw Richmond Hill over~ coming a 20 deficit as early as the halfway mark of the first period. Richmond Hill threw everything at Aurora but the shots kept missing the net by 20 feet. With only three minutes remaining in the third period it was Scott Bartlett‘s never-give-up attitude that got Rich- mond Hill going. He scored an unassisted goal. There was just over a Hill Carpenters suffer frustration Richmond Hill Carâ€" penter‘s Union Peewee Il‘s had a rather frustrating weekend losing two league games to Thornhill by identical 2-0 scores and then tying Lefroy 2-2. The Lefroy game proved to be a hard checking affair with Tony Veitch and Andy Field scoring the goals and Paul Grice gaining both assists. The two games against Thornhill were again tight checking affairs with goalies Rob Johnson and Tony Buydos playing well along with their defence. The forwards had difficulties against hot goaltending and goalposts. This year's edition of the Carpenters is coached by Danny Ransom. assisted by Basil Johnson and Bill Ransom and is managed by Don Sears. The teams comprises goalies Rob Johnson. Tony Guydos; defence. A real comeback effort by Richmond Hill who were down three goals to nil at the 14-minute mark of the second period. They came back to tie the score after 10 minutes of the second period only to have Orillia pull ahead 4-3 before that session ended. The beginning of the third period saw Rich» mond Hill pulling even again only to have Orillia go ahead 6â€"5 with a minute remaining. Then it was Scott Bartlett scoring his second goal to tie the game. Bartlett also picked up an assist. Team captain Jack Vantol played an excellent game and scored the first goal for Richmond Hill.
