C-4 â€" THE LIBERAL, Wednesday. January 11, 1978 House may incorporate original two rooms Hein tzman House now popular for community By MERILYN MCKE LVEY 14th in a series The crown grant to the land at the corner of Baythorn and Royal Orchard Drive was given to Anthony Hollingshead, a United Empire Loyalist at the turn of the 18th century. He built a two-room house on his property and it is believed that these rooms still exist, incorporated into the house that is now called the Heintzman House, a Thomhill community-owned building. In 1816, the property was sold for 750 pounds to Colonel William Cruikshank, a distiller and the area’s first Justice of the Peace. 0n the site of the Hollingshead farmhouse, the Colonel erected a 13-room mansion, made of adobe bricks created on the property. The walls were built two feet thick and the woodwork was carved from black walnut imported from England. A door has been made in the paneling of one of the windows in the lounge and through it one can see the adobe bricks and supporting logs. Cruikshank was a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars and in the 1850’s, he returned to England to die fighting in the Crimean War. The house’s next famous owner was Charles Heintzman of the family piano- making firm. Heintzman altered the house considerably in the 1930’s. He added the front portico, which includes, in the central portion, the original verandah, a con- servatory, a tiled solarium and a “Spanish style†bar room off the main dining room. It may have been at this time that the original adobe bricks were stuccoed over. In 1959, the house was sold to developers who proceeded to build single family houses on the property around it. The developers wanted to demolish the house and build high rise apartments on the site. However many residents of the Thomhill area opposed the destruction of such a handsome house and lead by Alan Sumner, the Town moved to buy the house. A special board was appointed to manage the house in 1968 and it was opened to the public as a community centre. The board has substantially renovated the house: new light fixtures have been added and the rooms, including the nine bedrooms, are being replastered and painted or papered. Presently, the board is proposing to remove a non-functioning fireplace and its stone mantel so the main dining room can be enlarged and joined with the con- servatory. Many community groups now meet in the house, including the Thomhill Bar- bershop, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and the Horticultural Society. The Lions Club furnished the lounge in 1969. The house can re rented and many weddings and parties have been held in the large, gracious rooms of the 170-year-old house. IF SOMEONE IS INJURED ON YOUR mom-3m WILL YOU EVER RECOVER?
