Re: Abraham Avenue. Thornhill. The Clerk, Town of Markham I would like to offer my comments on the two articles dealing with Abraham Avenue which appeared in the December 6, 1978, edition of the Thornhill Liberal. At the outset I would like to make it clear that the headline “Abraham Avenue residents feel they were mislead“ is a gross understatement. For background, we had previously owned a home on a through street in Richmond Hill and with two pre~school age children we were most concerned about the traffic. Frankly, this was our prime purpose for moving and a quiet street was the main criteria in looking for a new home. After being informed by the builder that Abraham would be a cul~de-sac and prior to signing an offer to purchase our home at 39 Abraham Avenue. we had. in order to be cer- tain. attended the Town offices to determine the status of the street ac- cording to the Town. We were assured by both Planning and Engineering Departm- ents on March 21. 1978, that the street would not be extended and would remain a cul-deâ€"sac. Had there been any possibility or mention of anything else, frankly we The Abraham cuIâ€"deâ€"sac Looking north from Centre Street in downtown Richmond Hill presents drastically different views between 1952 (top) and today. Structures which housed the Canadian Tire store and a Red and White food store, still stand, but their BARNEY DANSON M.P. May you and yours have a Happy Holiday from would not have bought the property. Prior to attending the Town Offices 1 had reviewed a copy of the Registered Plan, ob- tained from the Land Titles Office, and noted the 66-foot wide strip at the end of Abraham (as referred to in the fifth paragraph of the second Liberal article). I discussed this with Engineering Department and was advised that this was because: 1) It is a standard and practical engineering design. 2) It was necessary to leave this width to provide access for maintenance, if necessary, to the 50-foot Metro Toronto easement which extends across the end of the street. 3) There is a one-foot reserve (indicated on the Registered Plan) at the end of the street to prevent the extension and that Abraham would not be extended. All of these ex~ planations seemed to be logical and reasonable and as a result of all assurances we proceeded with the purchase. 1. The asphalt was laid in the form of a cul-de-sac prior to any building and subsequently curbs and sidewalks have been poured to clearly imply a culdesac. I would further add at this point that the attempt at deception has con- tinued all the way along by such methods as: In view of the foregoing we would expect that the Town of Markham will proceed to honor 4. The street was a topic during the recent municipal elections and we were again assured that it would remain a cul~de~sac4 3. Willowbrook Community Association have also been of the impression that Abraham would remain a cul-de- sac and that the “access road" would be blocked off in aproximately November, 1978. 2. Engineering Dep- artment plans show the current construction road as an “access road“ and we had been assured that following completion of construction in the area, the access road would be closed. 49¢ 3%? gnum‘. 12930 YONGE ST. First, this is not a policy and was not treated as a policy by the Board. This is too dynamic and sensitive a matter to be Letters Chairman answers Eric Baker letter Even those residents of Richmond Hill who have no children to be educated at the present time can be concerned about the quality of that education. The principal and teachers of the McConaghy School are an exemplary group who have worked together over a long period and produced splendid results. All the members of the McConaghy Association who have spent so much of their valuable time, and at their own expense, deserve public com- mendation. How come facts so hard to get, reader wonders We hear the names of their able spokesmen, but Board should tell us what’s going on It was disturbing to say the least, to learn that the York Board of Education has taken it upon itself to initiate a sex education course for OUR chilaren in OUR schools. This in itself is not wrong, but what is wrong. is that the parents of these children have a right to know what will be taught to their children re sex education; this fundamental right was not given to the parents. THe existence V of the sex-education sub-co- mmittee was news to me. What was their ob- jective? Where did they get their input? It is the Board’s duty and obligation to initiate programs regarding education. but in this instance, I believe that it has overstepped its authority. Sex education is not just another history or math course‘ There are many parents who believe as I do, that sex education is Heintzman Board outlines building’s use SIZE 138 ORANGE FLAVOR CRYSTALS 4x325 OZ.
