r 3 WS aAom tourney I get mellow at Christmas. I wish I could say the same for my mother. We’ve been estranged lately and it sure beats me why. There was a time when she’d do anything for me at Christmas. She’d buy me all kinds of toys, records, little cars, real cars, pay my room rent, keep me in clothes, little things like that. Even after I’d been working for 10 years. That was until she turned 70. She started to get touchy about things after that. Just because I hadn’t sent her a Christmas card for five years she decided to test my loyalty. For two years running, after 1970, she wouldn‘t buy me a car. I even offered to come down to four horses just to make it easier. Nothing would work. She was adamant. Things really got to a low ebb when she started refusing to accept my longâ€"distance phone calls. That was the last straw. Refusing to accept long-distance phone calls from your own son? I never thought I’d see the day. REMORSE Remorse continues to build in me as I go along. Last Christmas, for example, I called her three days ahead to warn her I‘d be home. Just in case there would be a bad snowstorm which happens often in Woodstock. Wanted to give her ample opportunity to get the driveway shovelled out. If there’s anything I hate, it’s going home for Christmas and having to shovel the driveway. Watch the corner Idon’t know what's bugging her. I’ve never been one to hold grudges. I even thought about buying her a motorized snowblower for Christmas, or even a power lawn mower for summer. But that’s no good. She never learned to drive. _ IT'S LIFE Chalk it up to life, I guess. I‘ll probably be a little crotchety when I reach .75, just like my mother. I‘m always optimistic at Christmas. I’m sure we‘re going to have a joyful reconciliation. Just as long as it doesn‘t snow before I get there. I like to see her happy. PEEWEE TOURNEY Lo and behold, it’s that time again. Time for the 8th annual Richmond Hill Rosetown Peewee Tournament. It kicks off at the Richmond Hill Arena at 9 am. next Tuesday Boxing Day and runs through to the following Thursday. All the above is simply a long preamblé to saying a Merry Christmas to you all, one and all. And don‘t forget to feed your moms. There will be 20 teams competing from such places as Samia, Brantford, Cobourg, and, of course, Richmond Hill‘and Thornhill. The grand championship game is Thursday at 8 pm. Be there and support the kids. TIDBITS One further note and one I’ve neglected. Just recently, friends of the late Bill Hoult of Richmond Hill dedicated a memorial trophy in his honor. Bill used to play in a pick-up league at the Maple Arena and hence the trophy presentatlon. A nice gesture and an excellent way to be remembered. It will go to the most valuable coach in the Maple Minor hockey association. And a good way to end this column, the last one for 1978. Cheers.
