4000 miles by bicycle, » Alaska-Mexican border ~ Few travellers have had as close a look at western Canada and the United States as Peter Wyss and Martin Tschilar. The two Swiss engineering graduates set out two years ago to see a bit of the world before settling down. They capped their visit to North America with a 4,000 mile bicycle trip from Alaska to the Mexican border. “You don‘t just see the country on such a trip," said Martin, 26, “you feel it.†The twosome who met in school in Switzerland came to Canada partly to improve their English. To get the best jobs in their homeland, they explained, fluency in two or e n three languages is required. usually German. French and English. Much later, they took the train from San Francisco to Flagstone Arizona for six days in the Grand Canyon. wheels of the bikes. At times‘ they needed food for five days and were carrying 70 pounds each. They took hiking boots and back-packs with them for sidetrips which became the highlights of the trip. One was a four-day hike through Mount McKinley Park in Alaska. They also visited Dawson City for a taste of the gold rush era. After their Arizona experience, the twosome flew back to the warmth of relatives‘ homes in Toronto, six months after they started out. Both Peter and Martin said the beautiful country was a highlight of their trips. They also visited the Maritimes and took a canoe trip through northern Ontario. They are about to return to Switzerland, but look forward to more visits to Canada. Last week, they visited Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bone in Thornhill.
