Hill minor soccer joins Metro loop By PATKELLY The Richmond Hill District Minor Soccer Club has raised its sights a notch or two for 1979. It has decided to join with neighboring clubs to form a league‘that will enter six teams in the fiercely competitive Metro Minor Soccer League. Boys registering for soccer last Saturday at the Richmond Hill Arena and this Saturday at both Richmond Hill and Oak Ridges will have a chance to try out for teams in this York Royals League. Those {vho are a'ccepted will have to be a very special breed of soccer player, highly skilled. tough and deeply dedicated. Throughout the sum» mer they will be travelling to places as far away as Oshawa and Oakville carrying the name of York to victory. During the winter they will devote a great deal of time to indoor and out- Legion midgets take Barrie in first tilt Richmond Hill Midgets hosted the Barrie Coâ€"ops Sunday afternoon to open their final playoff sories. As expected the hbckey game was fast-skating with plenty of hard hit- ting. As far as the Legion boys were concerned, everyone played hard heads-up hockey to take the game by a 5-1 margin. The Delfabro, Harrietha, DePiero line was particularly effective both ways. Ken Main opened the scoring half-way through the first period from' Shawn McDowell and Maurice Delfabro after both teams had missed close chances at both ends. Delfabro drew the Co-ops defence right out of the picture two minutes later and threw the puck to Dave Allen alone in front. Dave hammered it home before the Barrie goalie moved to close the period ahead 2-0. Richmond Hill ran into a few penalties in the second period, but great penalty-killing and some Soccer Execs THE RICHMOND HILL MINOR SOCCER CLUB Birth Certificate required as proof of age for NEW PLAYERS only Fee $20.00 per child, $30.00 per family of two or more players ALL BOYS AND GIRLS é‘oTH DAYS/BOTH LOCATIONS AGES 6-18 (BORN 1961-1973) door training This is definitely not the league for boys who regard soccer as something to occupy their time between the hockey season and a month at the cottage in the summer. Thg Region of York Coaches Association has pledged to supply each team with the best coaches in the area. Whether the Region of York can really put such a league together, and to what extent Richmond Hill can contribute to it, remains to be seen. At the moment the York Royals are a gleam in the eye of soccer enthusiasts whose ambition is to see the name of York written boldly on the Ontario soccer map. NOTES The coach and players of Richmond Hill Advanced Masonry were deeply appreciative of the gesture made by Mayor David Schiller and Rich- mond Hill Council in presenting them with a good goal-tending from Doug Macklin to hold the Coâ€"ops off the__b9ard. Maurice Delfabro sunk Barrie’s hopes for a big third period by scoring an unassisted short-handed goal with 46 seconds left in the second to make it 3â€" Paul Harrietha put the final crunch to Barrie‘s come-back in the first minute of the third with the Legion’s fourth goal, assisted by Randy DePiero. Barrie never really threatened for the rest of the hockey game, although Joe Marchildon spoiled the shutout bid half-way through the period with a hard blast for the visitors. Paul Harrietha finished off a pretty passing play from DePiero and Doug Jones with a perfect shot to the top corner to close the scoring 5â€"1. The team headed to Barrie Tuesday night with the third game Thursday night at 8 pm. in Richmond Hill. INVITES SOCCER IN 1979 SATURDAY.
