Looking more like the entrance to a grand theatre, this circular staircase is only one feature of the $5-million Tri-Bell Country Club, located on Bathurst Street in Richmond Hill. Enjoying the facility is club president Ernie Lustig. (Liberal photo by Bruce Hogg) I York councillors get raise It was no means unanimous. but York Region‘s administrative committee approved a six per cent salary increase on Thursday for the 17 members of regional r ouncil and the chairman. The pay increase requires regional council .ipproval tomorrow before it â€" takes affect. Each councillor would receive $10,508. up from $9,914 in 1978. One-third of .. councillor‘s salary is tonsidered expenses and is tax-free. Regional Chairman Bob Forhan would receive $41,048, up from 538,725 in 1978. Oneâ€"third of the chairman‘s salary also is designated tax- tree expenses. Six of the region’s nine mayors attended the meeting. The region‘s ad- ministration committee comprises the nine mayors. Richmond Hill Mayor David Schiller suggested that councillors should receive less than six per cent because elected representatives should set an example of restraint. He said that in Rich- mond Hill, councillors will receive only a three per cent raise this year. Mayor Ray TWinney of Newmarket disagreed. He said the increase is. reasonable and that regional councillors â€" in York are still falling behind their counterparts in Peel and Durham regions. Georgina Mayor Joe Dales wondered why councillors needed raises at all. He said Georgina Council had decided not to increase the councillor‘s stipend in 1979. When the vote was taken the proposal was tied at 3â€"3. The committee chairman Bob Forhan cast the deciding vote to recommend the increase. Six per cent was in- cluded in the 1979 budget for salary increases to regional councillors and the chairman, the committee was told. Ontario. He has been entering school-level science fairs since he attended Grade 2. Two years ago he won firsts at both the school fair and the Area finals and was an entrant at the County finals. This year, he decided to study an animal as part of - his exhibit. The rule is, if you want to use live animals in your demonstrations. they must be invertebrates or those without any developed backbone. “Otherwise, I guess we V DOUG CASE could have some kids bringing in horses or other large animals," said Doug, half in jest. During the winter months. when he got his first set of worms, Doug figured his basement was a cool enough place to store them. One day, he went down to start some experiments and found they had died. “I forgot to put them in the fridge and they just melted like jelly. I was more careful with the second batch I got from a bait supplier in Toronto." he said. So far. he has studied the effects of light (bright and dim). electricity (using a 6-volt battery) and various juices (apple and lemon, to start) on his slithering friends. He is in the process of gathering more details about the worms to help impress the judges at the national i fair. As part of the exhibit. Doug built a “wormery†in which he can study the behavior of the worms. He put it together out of wood. stained it and filled it with loam, sand and leaves. He‘s just com- pleted a new backdrop for it, which he‘ll take along to London. It measures about 24“ x 8“ and has a glass top. He‘s not too sure what to do with the worms when he‘s done with them. “They only last so long you know. Maybe I‘ll take them fishing." 1 THE LIBERAL. Wednesday.
