R i c h m o n d H i l 1 Volunteer Bureau is doing double duty these days. Since its inception in January of 1979 the Volunteer Bureau has been recruiting volun' leers to help about 45 agencies in the area. Last week the Volun- teer Co-ordinator, Sharen Smith said she took people and information from a number of agencies needing special summer help, into the three local high schools hoping to let students know there were alter- natives available if they did not have a summer job. Posters were set up in lhe halls of each school and booths displayed areas where certain agencies needed special volunteer help this summer. bureau does Almost 100 students registered for these volunteer jobs as a result of Miss Smith‘s idea. The most popular agencies were the Ontario Humane Society, the Villa Hospital. the York Region Y Day Camp and a day camp for the York (‘entral Association for the Mentally Retarded, she said. double duty Miss Smith said she had Iwo goals in mind when she came up with the idea. One was to let students know what they could get out of being volunteer workers â€" the Work experience (some colleges Won‘t accept students unless they’ve had practical volunteer experience), let teens know what volunteer- work is all about, the opportunity to do something valuable with their time, learn new skills and have practical training, and as well to find volunteers needed for special summer programs. Volunteer Anyone who has had second thoughts and would like to register for summer volunteer em- ployment, should call Sharen Smith at 883-2235.
