During the threeday opening celebration, the company will offer door prizes. McDonaid‘s Gift Certificates. balloons. coffee and donuts. The Homestead story came into existence about three years ago. Due to a misconception that plumbers were charging a fortune for jobs people could do themselves, people began using major chain stores to purchase home im- provement and repair needs. The solution for the plumbing contractor was the Homestead concept. That concept revolved around the involvement of master plumbers backed by the strength of traditional wholesalers. Basically, the idea meant converting the plumber‘s shop into a consumer oriented retail V 7 JON wooo ’ store. Such an outlet, operated by an ex- perienced. knowledge- able plumber had obvious advantages over the novice sales clerk system of mass merchandisers. The experienced plumber could explain in detail to customers the proper approach to any do-it»yourself project and ensure that correct purchases were made. Also. if the job turned out to be more than the customer expected, the plumber could make a trade call. Barrie Supply began testing the idea of retailing plumbing and electrical goods in 1975. Within a year, its success prompted inquiries about fran- chises. Two were added in July. 1976, and during the fall of that year, seven more local plumbers were approached by or recommended to Barrie Supply.
