Why not do it for bicycles for a change?“ Cater a bit to bikes - Al Duffy‘s remarks came at a Richmond Hill Parks and Recreation Com- mittee meeting dealing with a proposed con- struction of a bicycle path on the east side of Yonge Street from Highway 7 to Markham Road. They were inspired by a staff report that the Ministry of Tran- sportation had refused to pay for the cost. estimated at $48,000, of laying down a bicycle path as part of the re- construction of Yonge Street now underway. “The MTC has remained adamant that bicycle paths along high- ways are not their responsibility.“ the report said. It went on to explain that “if MTC had agreed to pay the cost of the Yonge Street cycling path staff would not object, but now that the Town is expected to pay staff would recommend it not be proceeded with at this time." This brought Duffy to the fore along with Councillor Mike Burnie. parks and recreation committee chairman. in favor of a Yonge Street bicycle path. “I think we should do it now while we have the opportunity." said Duffy. "Ten years from now it will cost a lot more. Even so. you‘ll never get a $48,000 price tag on a bicycle path anywhere else for this money. It‘d cost you much more right now." Councillor Burnie thought it would be an "excellent way to get people to use that part of the town." The Ministry of the Environment honored Richmond Hill's Recycling Committee yesterday. A Citation was presented to the group marking 900 tons of recycled material. It was back in October 1975 when the Richmond Hill Recycling Committee launched its community campaign for resource recovery. Yesterday, almost four years and countless truckloads of paper, metal and glass later, Environment Minister Harry Parrott awarded the group an Environ- ment Ontario Citation of Merit, formal recognition of the 60 volunteer members' outstanding contribution to the recovery of resources from waste. “Your committee has shown that a recycling program can work in Richmond Hill and that’s a potential take-off point for groups in many other areas," Dr. Parrott said, as he presented the framed certificate to committee chairman Michael Wheeler. “It proves that people can accept responsibility for waste management by starting in their own homes and com- munities.“ Environment Ontario has provided the com- mittee with 100 Rub- Recycling group wins citation On 2 acres Ravine Lot, King Sd. While the income from paper tonnage fluctuates, operating expenses are increasing steadily and the non-profit group finds it difficult to break even. Major expenditures involve operation of a depot on Elgin Mills Road, running a 10-ton truck for the curbside collection service, shipping materials recovered and salaries for the full-time foreman- truck driver and two assistants, ' employed fron_i_ Daybreak. “The group provides a reliable and important service throughout the area," Mayor David Schiller said. “In addition to the revenue the committee derives from the sale of recycled materials, the Town of Richmond Hill saves $6.50 per recycled ton in tax dollars through a rebate on its garbage contract." The municipality has assisted with a $2,000 grant to help maintain the recycling endeavor. Attending yesterday's ceremonies besides Mr. Wheeler and Mayor Schiller were Marlene 'I‘urner; N. Roy Clifton; Persis Abram; and Barry Rawlinson. She found herself in a ‘nightgown race' during the final evening ofswim activities for kids this summer.
