NOTE Final note: The Richvale Minor Ball Association will be holding an executive meeting December 17 in the Weldrick Room of the Richvale Community Centre. All interested parents are invited to attend. Time is 7 pm. GOOD, BAD That’s not necessarily bad. It’s both good and bad and a few things in between. Still, I believe one should work at trying to improve things and there you have the positive side of my nature. I‘m positive but I never make it a point to argue with parents at a minor hockey, minor ball, or minor soccer game. It gets harder to duck as you get older. Cheers. I know I seem to be pulling out more negatives than positives here. But, honestly, if you stay around this old world for awhile you realize that things and people never really change. Clothes and styles do but people stay the same. I can only surmise the idea is that if you get knocked out early in one tournament you can whistle over to the next one and maybe win it. And you tell me that isn’t putting the desire to win at any cost to the point of ridiculousness? Fun? Pshaw. Who‘s right, who’s wrong? My feeling is that the kids do play way too many games at the lower level. There seems to be a contest on to see how many games can be squeezed into one season. This goes on right up to midget and junior level and by that time a number of players probably are sick of the look of a hockey stick or puck. They just wear out or drop out, And it has always bugged me when I hear of teams entering one or two tournaments at the same time. And it happens more often than not. Continuing on the ‘you can’t win’ theme: A few years ago I ventured the opinion that youngsters simplyplay too many games a season. I might be slightly off but I’d reckon that youngsters of Atom or Pewee probably play something like 70 or 80 or more games a season including league, exhibitions, and those infernal tournaments. YES. NO Again I found adults who agreed and adults who didn’t. The ones who didn’t usually came out with the comment that ‘the kids just love to play games, they can’t get enough.’ So my question is how come there are parents around who make fools of themselves and their youngsters by shouting and screaming (and I don’t mean as in cheering) at hockey matches, or for that matter, at ballgames or soccer contests? WHO ME? The answer, to my mind, is a universal hang-up. We all see the faults in someone else but haven’t got a clue about our own. Simple, eh? Yeah, but just try and change it. NOTHING CHANGES It didn‘t change anything (I didn’t expect it to) because life just doesn’t work out that way. I’ll bet there isn't a parent around who would disagree on the essential results of that survey except for a few quibblings here or there. And I’ve been agreeing for as many years and, on occasions, have even taken typewriter in hand and said essentially the same thing. ' I’m amused mainly because it took a survey to find all these things out. Parents and coaches have been telling me this for something like 14 years. Minor hockey youngsters spend too much time in game conditions instead of perfecting their skills in practices; they often don‘t get the proper coaching; their parents become too involved by vocally criticizing their own youngsters, referees, coaches and such. They also ad- vocate the banning of body checking at the lower level which, incidentally, has already happened in a number of house leagues. The survey results went something like this (I’m recalling Strictly from memory so don‘t quote me): To me it was like going through a recurring dream. I’ve heard it all before type of thing and I expect to go on hearing it all again for the next hundred years. The questionnaire was attempting to elicit viewpoints on how minor hockey, skills and attitudes and such, could be improved. ' In any case it came to mind while watching a rehash on television of the results of a recent Ontario Sports Council questionnaire sent out to the parents of minor hockey players. I’m always amused by the fact that the more things change the more they stay the same. That might be a profound statement but I‘m not sure.
