Peewee Xmas tourney time again By BOB REEVES Once again, along with Christmas. comes our annual Peewee Hockey Tournament. This year it is going to be the biggest and best ever. Commencing on Boxing Day, 28 teams from the United States and Ontario will arrive to begin the long road to the grand cham- pionship. - Fronf south of the border Wheatfield will represent New Ma gna B ’3 win, tie games The Richmond Hill Magna B‘s won a game and tied another in recent action. They downed Barrie 5-2 December 8 and prior to that tied Thomhill 5-5. The game against Barrie saw the Hill open the scoring with Smith scoring an unassisted goal. Barrie tied the game but after that Richmond Hill took over with its best effort of the year. Then it was Mike Smith scoring his second unassisted goal with the last counter coming from Peter Major assisted by Pipher and Barton. Barrie‘s second goal It was MacLean scoring assisted by Glen Apps and Pat Morra. The next goal was scored by Darrell Bynoe from Troy Mitchell. Merry Christmas. Now that we’ve got that over with we’ll get down to the business at hand. What business at hand? I'm suffering from the preseason slumps. Everi-iivorse; cdnfused.-I’m not even sure when the paper comes out next week. Maybe this is my Christmas column and I don‘t even realize it. Merry Christmas again, just in case. h" it"s'ï¬Ã©t'é‘é's'y sitting here on a Monday night trying to pump up a few “Ho, Ho’s" just to get yourself in the mood. Especially with Christmas Eve still eight lumpy days away. The thrill is gone. -. . . ,- _ ,... Ans L- Of course, as I mentioned last week, the eighth an nual Richmond Hill Peewee Tournament kicks off Boxing Day with some 28 teams competing from the United States and Ontario. It’ll wind-up the following Sunday with the grand championship game. Should be fun. “J I even tried to inspire myself by bringing a radio to the office in the hopes of hearing some Christmas Carols. When I turned it on all I got was the Maple Leafs’ Darryl Sittler ' and Minnesota‘s Paul Symyr exchanging Christmas presents at mid-ice while Dave Tiger Williams was trying to hang a Christmas tree on someone else’s head. By the time the brawl was over and everything straightened out I wasn‘t in the mood for Christmas Carols. Went home to bed. TOMORROW? Maybe it’ll come tomorrow night or the night after. In the meanwhile there’s lots happening for you hockey fanatics next week in Richmond Hill. On the junior hockey front the Dynes Jewellers Junior B’s will be tangling with the Thornhill Thunâ€" derbirds on the same Boxing Day at the Thornhill Community Centre. Gametime is 1:30 pm. So pick the turkey out of your teeth and wander down to watch the action. RAW The Richmond Hill Provincial A Rams will also be playing Boxing Day Night at ‘the Hill Arena. Opposition will be Hamilton and gametime is 8:30 pm. Speaking of the Rams, I guess you’ve heard of their rather disastrous season to date. We all have bad years (mine started in 1956 and it’s still going strong) and I’m sure better days are ahead. Besides, it’s Christmas (isn’t it?) and I refuse to be gloomy. I suppose it’s small Eomfof‘t for the Rams but one of their ex-players seems to be doing quite well for himself in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars. I’m referring to Glen Sharpley who has scored 15 goals to date with the Stars (he didn't play Monday night due to an injury). Sharpley played with the Rams some five or six seasons ago under then coach Carl Brimblecombe. Remember him? Time certainly passes. MEDITATION Carl, incidentally, was with the Markham Waxers earlier in the season but was released. He apparently had trouble “motivating†his players also ala Bernie Geoffrion. He was replaced by Ralph Beer, ex of the Aurora Tigers and Thornhill Thunderbirds. Apparently Beer, who replaced Brimblecombe at Aurora, couldn’t motivate the Tigers. I‘m going to have to look that word up. What hap- pened to the days when a hockey player motivated himself? Oh well, welcome 1980, and hold onto your psychiatrist. Merry Christmas. OBSERVATORY LANE RICHMOND HILL 884-1833 889-1436 Merry Christmas? THOBNLEA LUMBER York State and Ohio is sending a team from Cincinnati. Against Thomhill it was Smith opening the scoring from Jimmy Barton. Thomhill then stormed back to take a 4-1 lead only to have Richmond Hill reciprocate with four more to lead 5â€"4. The Dynes Jewellers Junior B‘s took a symbolical jump off the Burlington bridge in their past two games. Yes, well. the Richmond Hill Provincial Junior A hockey Rams lost two more games, their 22nd and 23rd of the season compared with just three wins and a tie. Nothing else to say but give the scores which saw the Rams losing 6-3 to Wexford Raiders Tuesday night of last week at home and then being savaged 16«l by league~leading Dixie Beehives Sunday night in Dixie. The Rams, who are obviously in training for next season (this season has to be a lost cause as far as making the playoffs is concerned) actually had a chance to win the Wexford game after coming from behind a 3-0 first period deficit. They came out skating in the second period with Joel Reeves starting it off with his third goal of the season at 4:41 on a power play effort with newcomer Rich Gameau assisting. Then it was Glen Oliver getting his 12th of the season on another power play at 15:08 from Gar- neau and Steve McAleese. The optimism dissipated into oblivion in the final 20 minutes as the Rams sagged and the visitors drummed in three more goals. And also stay for the Rams‘ game which will follow at ap proximately 8:30 pm. This is a promising very young Junior team and certainly needs the support of each and everyone of us in Richmond Hill. Gino Rulli led the team in the tournament with seven points while Rossi had four and Marcus Rulli, three points. O‘Meara had six points while Jason Cairns and Grant O'Meara were both selected as most valuable players in the tournament. Port Perry, in the meanwhile, crushed all opposition-as they downed King City 6-1, Aurora Minor Atoms 10-0, Stroud 3-1, and then King City. Rams' general manager Sil Steffan would only comment that Gameau “played very well out therein both games" and that he was still in the market for new players. Cairns and O'Meara sparked the victory with two goals apiece with Gino Rulli getting a goal and an assist; and Busnello, two assists. Steven Robinson had a goal with single assists to Marcus Rulli, Rossi and Sean Sanderson, In a word, they met Burlington twice and lost by 6-1 Monday night and 8-3 Friday night. ‘Burlington's a big. fastâ€" Peter Glynn got the only goal for Richmond Hill‘ “Let's face it, we’ve got a lot of rookies out there, 17 of them. and we‘re hoping they'll develop. Top scorer on the Rams‘ team is veteran Steve McAleese who has 19 goals and 15 assists for 34 points.
