Peewee-Thornhill,' fred Simpson Hapodeew Year I just do??? “believe it’s almost 1980. Is it? Think I’ll just sit here and have another sip of wine and maybe it‘ll go away. What happened to 1970, 1960, 1950? Once upon a time I used to shuffle decades like some people shuffle cards. If one shuffle didn’t do me justice, well, the next one surely would. All of a sudden I realize I’m running out of decades. The sand running through my.hour glass is turning my beach into the Sahara Desert. Just a few years ago a new year would have been cause for celebration, for jubilation, for a hangâ€"over. I could hardly wait for the party to start. Nowadays I get a hang-over by just opening the bottle let alone drinking out of it. Just the label makes me cringe. And if I stay up past 10 p.rn., I turn into a pumâ€" pkin. HEAVY THINKER So I’ve got to do some heavy thinking here. I’d better start this new decade with a new image. Think I’ll become suave or something like that. I‘ll become a man of letters, a connoisseur (I hope I spelled the word right) of fine art and wine. That’s it. No more $2 wines for me. I’ve reaped my “Random Har- vest.” I’m going to buy $5 wine and sniff the cork before I taste it like the way you should. I‘m going to read good books, quiver with an- ticipation every Sunday morning when Clyde Gilmour comes on the air and plays the classics like Verdi, Haydn, Rimsky Korsakov (sounds like a horse that ran in the third), the Wife Beaters, stuff like that. Oh, I'm still going to have a sense-of-humor. I‘d never part with that. But it‘ll have a darker hue to it, more texture. Sophisticated is the word I’m looking for I think. AW, NUTS Aw, to heck with it. I‘ll never make it. Anyone who goes Christmas shopping and then loses his car in the parking lot for an hour isn’t likely to change in 1980. And I still haven‘t gotten around to sewing the but- tons on the sleeves of my 1960's suitcoats. When I buy a pair of shoes I scuff them just taking them out of the bag, forget to polish them, forget to buy polish even. When you still can‘t come up with a proper knot in your tie after 20 years of trying, well. it bodes ill for the 1980‘s. And I still can’t remember the endings of jokes. Idon't exercise any more, walk up 12 flights of stairs, or even bother to look uneasily at the paunch that‘s ever so slowly but surely creeping out over my belt. PAID DUES But I‘m not worried about it. I‘ve earned that paunch, I’ve paid my dues. So this New Year‘s Eve I'm going to find an easy chair, crack open a cold bottle of beer. get a stack of Sinatra records and bring back the 1950‘s. Just for awhile I‘ll be young and virile again, be somebody I really never was, and just drink it all in. To hell with the 1980‘s. I‘ll handle them just the way I handled the other decades. I‘m a survivor of a million hockey games, two million arena hotdogs. countless old labels and restaurant meals. The 1980's don‘t stand a chance with me. I‘ve got a brand new $5 pipe clutched firmly in my hand. some tobacco, a full tank of gas in my Honda, a mortgage that will be paid off in the year 2,015, and a firm conviction that tomorrow will bring me much bliss and, hopefully. one day after another of just getting up, looking around, and thinking it's simply great to be alive in 1980, or 1990. for that matter. , Excuse me now while I have another sip of wine and get back to sewing that button on my jacket sleeve. Perfect bbwling The Richmond Hill Pro Bowl had a couple of firsts going for it recently. ' VS One of them saw two 300 per- fect single games recorded in one night in the same league. The league was the Richmond Hill Three-Man 10 pin Classic which holds forth Monday nights. Making the first perfect game in the first game (without han- dicap) was Dean McLachlan. Along came Graydon “Blondie” Robinson in the third game and did it again. A club official said it was the first time in the “history of Canada” that two perfect games were thrown on the same night in the same league. Yet another highlight came a few weeks earlier when Howie Kotchie registered an 811 triple which was the second highest total ever recorded in Toronto history, If you‘re going to be champions you might as well be pretty too. These members of Crosby Avenue Public School in Rich- mond Hill have just won the Area 3 Senior Girls Volleyball championship. Junior B’s tie rough game If the Dynes Jeweller Junior B’s expected to meet Santa Claus when they took a trip to Barrie last Thursday night they were sadly disappointed. What they met was a testy Barrie crew and coach who didn't take kindly to being tied 5â€"5. At least they didn‘t according to Dynes coach Pete Artemchuk who was miffed at the Barrie rough play to the point he has officially complained to the league president. “In a word it was a disgusting exhibition of uncalled for dirty hockey." said Artemchuk. “It got so bad at one point that the entire Barrie team. with the exception of two players, left the bench to 1 attack the players we had on the ice “I’m happy to say our players remained on the bench. They stayed there for the simple reason I have a rule that anyone leaving our bench, without my orders can start looking for another team to play for.” IIAIR PULLING What incensed Artemchuk was the fact that on one flare-up near the Barrie bench the coach reached out and grabbed one of the Oak Ridges players by the hair. "The whole thing was ridiculous and unfair and also a surprise to me. Barrie is usually a clean. wellâ€"disciplined team. I guess they were frustrated because they were being contained by a team with five affiliated players in their lineâ€"up. Artemchuk was referring to the five‘players brought up from the Toronto Red Wing Midgets to replace some missing regulars including leading scorer Karl Taylor, John Murphy and Danny Henderson. “The youngsters played very well," said Artemchuk. He was also happy with the play of new goalie' Brad Neale who was outstanding. The game itself saw Artem- chuk‘s team going into the third period leading 4-3 only to give up two goals to trail 54. Ed Gundert saved the day at 14:31 with a power play goal from Gino Cavalini and Robin Searle. Other goals were by Mike Mattine from Brian Risk; Cavalini from Darrell Bettie and Rick Potter; Cavalini from Andre Damonze; Mattine from Risk. This game also saw Mattine picking up a shoulder injury when he was hit by two Barrie players. “The two of them charged him with one hitting him with an elbow," said Artemchuk. “It was a deliberate attempt to injure."
