Transportation on Yonge Street was a bothersome question for residents and politicians of this area as the year 1930 got underway. When the ,county with- drew its court action, radial service from Toronto to Richmond Hill (as far north as the old bus loop across from Richmond Heights Centre) was resumed July 17 after a four-month hiatus. With that vote becoming known‘ the municipalities north as far as Newmarket decided to consider purchasing the line from Richmond Hill to Newmarket, at $150,000, but nothing came of that effort. This revived service was to continue until the autumn of 1948 when radial service was discontinued in an effort to conserve electricity during that winter. Some years before, the City of Toronto had purchased the North Yonge Railway from Mackenzie and Mann and were threatening to cease operating the radial cars on March 15 and sub- stitute buses. Results of that vote were 1,835 for and 110 against In Richmond Hill, 248 ratepayers voted yes and only six voted no. In the Yonge Street area of Markham, the line purchased was approved by a vote of 171 to eight, and in Vaughan, the front favored the proposal 178 to 10. Involved in the pur- chase were North York, Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill with the asking price $150,000. A vote on this proposal was set for May 3 with only property owners and tenants with ex- ceptionally long leases entitled to vote. WitB Toronto‘s plans to revamp its Yonge Street service by building a In fact. a rival bus system was introduced in 1929. County Council decided to fight the cancellation in the courts on the basis of an existing agreement. Negotiations were held March 20 in North York Township Hall for the purchase of the line as far north as Richmond ’Hill with the TTC doing the operating. Area residents felt that bus service would not be as safe (one had burned) or as satisfactory as the electrically operated cars. The city proposed to York County Council that the latter either purchase the line or assume responsibility for deficits. Gilbert Vice-Chairman D.K. Fraser, QC Commissioner In October, 1979, this Commission was advised by Ontario Hydro that the increase in the wholesale cost of power for 1980 would be about 16.4%. Of this overall increase, 7.4% represented the end of the special rebates under the regulations of the Antiâ€"Inflation Board, for excess revenues in 1978, and the remainder is due to increased costs for power generation in 1980. Rate studies were then performed for Vaughan Hydro, and the conclusions drawn were that, aside from the phasing-out of the special discounts which will be complete on December 31st, 1979, an increase in local rates of 10.8% would be necessary. The rate schedule shown below was therefore adopted by the Commission in November, and, subject to the approval of Ontario Hydro, will be applied to energy used after December 31$t, 1979. The usual technique of pro-rating energy use on the basis of the ratio of days before year-end to the normal billing period will be used for the initial 1980 billing. Former customers of Woodbridge Hydro should note that the phasing-in discount applied to their bills in 1979 will no longer apply.
