Queen’s Park By ALF STONG MIA â€"â€" York Centre On Monday, December 17. the Minister of Energy made a statement in the Legislature concerning the Ontario Hydro transmission lines in the C-4 â€" THE LIBERAL. Wednesday I’arkway- Belt between (flaireville Transformer Station and (‘herrywood Transformer Station. which transmission line passes through the towns of Vaughan and Markham on the edge of .he town of Richmond Hill. He indicated that the line would proceed and ‘hai no part of it would be buried. He also indicated “the location of the Parkway Bell has not been determined east of Highway 48_and there have been no hearings under .he Parkway Belt Planning and Develop- meni Acl. However. following a review co-ordinaled by the Parkway Bell Steering Committee. the general roule of the lransmission line recommended by Dr. Rolandl was adopted by lhe GovernmenL . . . “I should also advise members that at the request of the Box Grove Ratepayers Association the Parkway Belt Steering Committee has examined three alternate routes near Box Grove. "The Steering (‘om- mittee‘s report. which 1 ttm tabling today. supâ€" ports the route on the north side of the railway tracks The route somh of ~the railway tracks was nol recom- mended. largely because of the number of homes that would be affected. “The third alternate route would add con- siderably to the length and cost of the tran- smission line and was considered inferior for this reason . . . The Box (:rove Ratepayers Association has asked for Clarification of certain matters in the report and .his will be undertaken shortly“. Previously the Minister ot the Environment denied an environmental impact study with respect the construction of the transmission lines east of Highway 48 and now the Minister of Energy has supported that position. The Minister of Energy rather than following the precedence already established under the enabling legislation which would permit a public inquiry has opted for an expropriation inquiry which would be limited to hearing from all affected land owners. This persistent ap- proach by these two Ministers although committed lo a program continues [0 deny everyone affected a righl io be heard. The National Energy Board has been asked by a group of land ovmers who have been fighting a long drawn out battle against the()ntario Hydro transmission line to halt construction of the line and suspend hydro‘s exports to the United States. At a press conference. a spokesman for the Interested Citizens Group said hydro is exporting power at rates below those charged to Ontario residents. Ontario Liberal Leader Stuart Smith raised this matter in the Legislature. asking the Minister of Energy whether it was true that hydro was selling surplus electricity to US. utilities “for as much as 1 cent per kilowatt‘hour less than what ()ntario consumers are paying'K The Minister replied that the complainants were comparing “the wholesale price of exports I0 the Ontario retail price". Asked by the Liberals Why US. utilities could buy power more cheaply “than our own consumers" the Minister said hydro‘s policy was to set export prices at least 10 per cent above costs.
