Description
Wouldn’t you know it - we get our plan in place, steel ourselves for a conversation with approaching strangers, enter the diner, and it is empty.
We stand there, four innocent gals thinking “what’s going on, this is Timmie’s, it is 2:30 coffee break time, and there’s nobody here. Nor are there any vehicles coming into the parking lot

We wait - still nobody arrives.
Finally we hear motion behind us. How did that lady come in the back door and we not notice her arrival. She’s already seated in the booth.
We look at one another, swallow hard, and approach her.
Bonnie did the honours of introducing our little group and explaining to her that we’re doing clue#4 of a province wide Women’s Institute scavenger hunt, and we would like to chat with her and pay for her order.
Well that was a bust - turns out Susan was a volunteer making the smiley face cookies for the Palmerston Tim Hortons and she just wanted to get off her feet and sit and take a break for a while. She had heard of Women’s Institute but really was not familiar at all. We told her about our branch, what we do, some of our past and upcoming activities, gave her a bookmark, and invited her to attend our next meeting.
We then co-erred her into upgrading her water to a peach quencher.
Her granddaughter, assistant manager was behind the counter and she came out and joined us for a group picture. She got another employee(a teenage fellow) to take our photo(technology to operate Lynda’s picture taking tablet was a cinch in his hands). “Will you take another shot”. “Oh I’ve already taken 3”.
We seen in Susan characteristics that we hope for in a perspective W.I. Member . She was volunteering at the Tim Hortons her daughter manages and she willingly gave up a lot of her break to help out 4 strange women!
With that project under our belts we four W.I.ladies ordered coffee and smiley cookies, and we were able to sit down, relax and enjoy a few minutes to socialize.
And wouldn’t you know it…..now Tim Hortons is full of people!
